International Federation of Liberal Youth

Statement
Date: Saturday, March 01, 2008
From: IFLRY Bureau
Subject: Today’s Incidents in Armenia
The IFLRY Bureau strongly condemns today’s violent actions by the Armenian government
authorities against protesters in Yerevan, as well as the detainment of members of the opposition and the house arrest of presidential candidate Levon Ter-Petrossian.
The IFLRY Bureau calls for the immediate release of all political prisoners, including the instant lift of Ter-Petrossian’s house arrest, and urges the Armenian government to let their citizens exercise their rights of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.
Moreover, the IFLRY Bureau calls upon the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the European
Commission to use their good relations to the Armenian government in order to make sure, that the internal conflict between government and opposition is not solved by force, but through dialogue.
Conflicts can only be solved by peaceful negotiations - violence is never a sustainable solution.
Finally, the IFLRY Bureau urges international media not to look away, but to take action by
objectively informing the public about the recent developments in Armenia.
